Abstract (EN)
In this study, the population and settlement characteristics of Upper Karabakh and its surroundings were examined. In addition to the statistics from 1813 to the present, the resettlement of people in Upper Karabakh, the number and location of the population after the evacuation were examined. Population geography studies the regional systems in which the population lives in its regional groups and their various socio-economic and natural conditions, features of formation and development. In this sense, the population characteristics of the Upper Karabakh region are discussed in terms of socioeconomic structure, age, gender and population movements. The region is located in the joint zone of Azerbaijan. In the Soviet period, the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region was established here with an area of 4,400 km2, or 5.1% of the total territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan. According to the 1970 census, the population of the NagornoKarabakh Autonomous Region is 150,313. Nagorno-Karabakh's population consisted of Azeri Turks until the beginning of the 19th century. Starting from 1820, Armenians were deported en masse to Azerbaijan, especially to this region. In Armenian sources, the name of the region is referred to as "Arsakh". What is interesting is that the origin of this word belongs to Azerbaijan and Turks. The original version of the word is "Arsak" given to the heroes of the Sak tribes living in the region, their husbands. Armenians falsified the word. The region began to be referred to as the Upper Karabakh region after 2020. Keywords: Azerbaijan, High Karabakh, Population, Settlement, Population change
