Investigation of the effect of sportive characteristics of badminton players on sport specific achievement motivation

Purpose : It was examined whether sport character traits in badminton branch have an effect on sporting success with different sub-dimensions. Materials and Methods: In this study, a mixed research method integrating quantitative and qualitative data was used. Combining (triangulation) design was used as the research design. The population of the study consists of 683 licensed athletes who participated in the Senior Turkish Badminton Championship held in Ankara on 21-26 December 2021. In the quantitative dimension of data collection; "Personal Information Form", "Sport Specific Achievement Motivation Scale", "Sport Character Scale" were used. In the qualitative dimension; semi-structured interview form was used. In the analysis of the quantitative data of the study, correlation and regression analyses were used to analyze the relationships between the dimensions determining the scale levels, and t-test, one-way analysis of variance (Anova) and post hoc (Tukey, LSD) analyses were used to examine the differences in scale levels according to the descriptive characteristics of the athletes. The significance level was accepted as p<0.05. Content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. Results: In the study, it was found that there were significant differences on the variables of monthly income, years of doing sports, age and being a national athlete according to the sport character levels of the participants, and as a result of the analyzes on sport-specific achievement motivation, a significant difference was found according to the years of doing sports. A positive, statistically significant but weak relationship was found between sport character and sport-specific achievement motivation. Conclusion: In the study, the fact that there was a significant difference in the sport character levels of the participants according to the year of doing sports, age and monthly income, it was concluded that the education given, the maturity that comes with age and the socio-economic level brought by monthly income have an effect on the sport characters of the athletes.
