Analysis of the contribution of context-based teaching to fifth grade pattern concept learning

The aim of this research was investigate the effects of teaching materials prepared according to the REACT strategy of context based teaching approach on fifth grade students' conceptual changeon the subject of pattern. A total of 30 fifth grade female students studying at the imam-hatip secondary school with vocational education in the province of Bursa in the 2020-2021 academic year participated in the research. Pre-evaluation and post-evaluation test, worksheets, semi-structured interview form, video and audio recordings developed by the researcher were used as data collection tools in the research. At the beginning of the research, a pre-evaluation test was applied. During the implementation process, activities were carried out in accordance with the stages of the REACT strategy. After the application, the final evaluation test was applied. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the students and students' views on the course processes were presented. Qualitative research design was adopted since the reasons for the behavior of the participants were explained without the aim of obtaining numerical data in the research. In this study, action research, one of the qualitative analysis methods, was used. The findings of the research were created by using content analysis techniques from the data obtained. As a result of the research, it was seen that the context-based teaching approach provided a positive conceptual change by reducing alternative concepts in the course processes taught according to the REACT strategy. It has been observed that the selected contexts have a positive effect on the school culture of the students. In addition, it has been concluded that with the developed teaching materials, it is easier to reach mathematical concepts, contribute to the ability to relate and develop a positive attitude towards mathematics..
