An evaluation of 189th Verse of Surah al- Baqarah in the context of question and answer

The Qur'ān was revealed gradually over approximately twenty-three years. During this time, events, situations, and questions cause some verses to be revealed. The subject of the research is Sūrah al-Baqara, 2/189, which is one of the verses revealed in response to the questions directed to the Prophet. The fact that the verse is not evaluated in terms of the question-answer relationship reveals the problem of missing the mental and practical transformation desired in the addressee and the answer to the question asked. In order to reveal the pragmatic aspect of the language, which takes into account the context of the period in which the Qur'an was revealed and prioritizes its feature of being an address rather than a text, it is necessary to evaluate the verse in the context of question-answer relationship and to conduct research on the environment of its revelation. In addition to the narrations about occasions of the verse, in the research conducted on the period of revelation, it has been determined that the situation behind this question is some imaginations and beliefs attributed to the crescents by the people who asked the question. In the answer to the question, it was seen that mental and practical transformation was aimed at the addressee. It has been concluded that the imaginations and beliefs about the crescents in the mind of the addressee have been corrected since there are time measures for humans and pilgrimage. In addition, it has been determined that the custom of "entering the houses from behind was not only practiced by Ahmasīs but also by the people of Yathrib at the beginning of Islam. The verse emphasizes that this practice, which is seen as birr, is not actually birr, shows that a practical transformation is aimed at the addressee.
