Abstract (EN)

This thesis aims to discuss the schooling processes of Roma children living in Yenisahra and Barbaros neighborhoods in Atasehir,Istanbul by way of presenting parents' views and focusing on Romas' way of living using Bourdieu's concepts of capital, habitus, field and symbolic violence. It's based on a three year fieldwork period and open-ended in depth interviews with twenty Roma women. At the end of the research it's been found that; -housing quality, employment problems, and economical setbacks affect parents' attitudes toward the schooling of their children -almost all young Romas have been registered to compulsory primary education which is encouraged with scholarships, however the decision to pursue a high school education is,as told, given by the children themselves -Roma children choose not to get a high school degree as a result of poverty, low academic achievement, lack of role models and the permissive parenting attitude.
