Abstract (EN)

This study was planned and conducted in order to evaluate food addiction, depression and nutritional status in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. 127 adult individuals living in Ankara, who applied to a private doctor's office for bariatric surgery and had a general health examination by the physician, voluntarily accepted to participate in the study. A questionnaire form including questions about demographic characteristics, health conditions and nutritional habits was applied to the individuals by face to face interview method. Three-day food consumption records were taken to determine the nutritional status of individuals. Anthropometric measurements of the individuals were made and basal metabolic rate, waist / height and waist / hip ratio were calculated. Food addiction of the individuals was assessed using the Yale Food Addiction Scale. Depression status of individuals was evaluated with Beck Depression Scale (BDI). 49 of the individuals are male (38.6%) and 78 of them are female (61.4%), with an mean age of 38.7±11.24 years. 96.2% of women and 93.0% of men had a diet before. It was determined that 53.8% of women and 20.4% of men skipped meals. Energy, carbohydrate, protein, fat and cholestrol percentages as a result of the daily diet of the individuals meet the "Recommended Dietary Allowances" (RDA) recommendation. According to the RDA recommendations, it has been found that the potassium mineral that individuals take in their daily diet is insufficient in all individuals, and vitamin E, pantothenic acid, calcium and iron are insufficient in women. The mean BDI score was found to be 15.2 ± 8.21 in men and 16.8 ± 7.30 in women. In women, the average BMI of individuals in the range of minimal depression is 41.0 ± 7.38 kg/m2, the average BMI of individuals in the range of mild depression is 39.9 ± 4.16 kg/m2, for those with moderate depression the BMI average is 42.9 ± 7.27 kg/m2 and the average BMI of individuals in the range of severe depression is 46.7. The relationship between depression severity and BMI in women is found to be ± 1.35 kg/m2 which is statistically significant. The average waist circumference of individuals with food addiction (129.8 ± 14.20 cm) was found to be statistically significantly higher than the average of individuals without food addiction (126.4 ± 16.20 cm). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between BMI values and carbohydrate percentage values of individuals, and a statistically significant negative weak relationship was found between protein percentage values. In conclusion, in order to contribute to the prevention of obesity, food addiction, depression and nutritional states need to be examined more and done more studies on these issues.
