The Baroque period recitative

Recitative has been examined throughout the history of Western music from the Baroque period to the Contemporary era, focusing on the leading composers of each epoch. Its origins lie in the early Baroque practices developed under the influence of Ancient Greek tragedy by the Florentine Camerata. This mode of expression, initiated by pioneering composers such as Claudio Monteverdi and Jacopo Peri, gradually became central to the dramatic structure of opera. This study traces the evolution of recitative, beginning with the concept of "Stile Rappresentativo" in the Baroque period, continuing through the Classical period with composers like Gluck and Mozart who sought clarity and balance, moving into the Romantic era where composers such as Bellini emphasized lyrical expression, and culminating in the Modern period with figures like Schönberg who introduced techniques such as atonality and Sprechstimme. The study analyzes one recitative example from each of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods. Through musical analysis, historical sources, and music theory, it reveals the formal and functional transformations of recitative. Within this framework, the study demonstrates that recitative is not merely a vehicle for narrative but also a reflection of the evolving dramatic sensibilities and musical approaches of each historical period, enhancing its expressive power over time.
