Cultural values in Bariş Manço songs

This study adopting document analysis as a qualitative research method aims to identify cultural values in Barış Manço songs and explore to what extent and how these values are incorporated into his songs. The lyrics of 96 Turkish songs written by the singer himself constitutes the data for this study. The data have been categorised into five as elements of vocabulary, concepts, history/geography, religion/belief and lifestyle. The data have been analysed within the framework of 18 sub-themes such as idioms, proverbs, phrases, reduplications, people, animals, foods, drinks, occupations, numbers, colours, organs, love words, historical figures, events and works of art, cities, places, religion concepts and traditions. The findings indicate that idioms are the most commonly used elements in Barış Manço songs, through which cultural values are handed over from generation to generation. In conclusion, the songs of Barış Manço could be used as effective and enriched materials for linguistic, conceptual and cultural purposes in teaching Turkish as a first language and/or a foreign language. Teachers can use Barış Manço songs as a tool for teaching the concepts identified in the findings section of this study. Keywords: Barış Manço, culture, values.
