Randomized controlled comparison of second colonoscopies performed on the same day and by appointment in patients with inadequate bowel cleansing

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the results of repeat colonoscopies performed on the same day and with re-appointment in patients with inadequate bowel cleansing. Material Method: The study was conducted as a prospective randomized controlled. Eighty patients who were found to have inadequate bowel cleansing in elective colonoscopies performed by the General Surgery Clinic were included in the study. Forty patients were included in the same day group and 40 patients were included in the appointment group. On the same day, the colonoscopy group was hospitalized and sennoside A+B calcium was given and the procedure was repeated. In the other group, an appointment was made and standard colonoscopy preparation protocol was applied. Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS) was used for bowel preparation quality. Cecal intubation time, cecum intubation rate, procedure time, BBPS score and polyp detection rate were compared for both groups. It was questioned whether they could use all the additional dose of laxative given and whether they developed nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Comparisons between groups were made using the Student's t test, since the assumption of normal distribution was provided.Relationships between categorical variables were evaluated with the chi-square test. In the testing of two-sided hypotheses, p<0.05 was considered sufficient for statistical significance. Results: The mean age of the patients was 53.1 in the same day group and 60.7 in the appointment group. In the same day group, %52.5 of the patients were female and %47.5 were male. In the appointment group, %45.9 were female and %54.1 were male. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of age and gender (p>0.05). The rate of cecum intubation was significantly higher in the same-day group than in the group given an appointment (p<0.022). The total BBPS score was 7.9 ± 1.79 in the same day group and 6.89 ± 2.23 in the appointment group, and a statistically significant difference was found (p=0.03). When the two groups were compared in terms of tolerability of the procedure, no difference was found between them (p>0.05). Conclusions: Same-day colonoscopy is an effective method and can be performed safely in patients with inadequate bowel cleansing.
