ABSTRACTSUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL READERS? USE OFREADING STRATEGIESUzunçakmak, PınarM.A., Department of Teaching English as a Foreign LanguageSupervisor: Prof. Theodore S. RodgersCo-Supervisor: Dr. Susan JohnstonJuly 2005This study was designed to investigate (a) generic reading strategy use as reported bythe students and (b) the extent to which successful and unsuccessful readers differ in their useof reading strategies. The study was conducted with 112 upper-intermediate level students atMiddle East Technical University (METU), Department of Basic English (DBE) in the springsemester of 2005.Data were collected through two questionnaires and two stimulated recall tasks. Thefirst questionnaire was given to 112 students to investigate generic strategy use as reported bythe students. The second questionnaire, administered to 17 successful and 17 unsuccessfulreaders, chosen from among the 112 students, provided data about how much previousstrategy instruction successful and unsuccessful readers recalled. Stimulated recall tasks donewith two successful and two unsuccessful readers provided insight into the reading strategiesthese students reported using while performing the reading tasks. To analyze the data, means, frequencies, and standard deviations were calculated. Inaddition, t-tests were run to explore the possible differences between the responses given bysuccessful and unsuccessful readers. The results indicate that the students overall made frequent use of 12 readingstrategies. However, successful and unsuccessful readers did not differ significantly in theirreported use of reading strategies and recall of strategy instruction. In the stimulated recall ofreading task performance, however, successful and unsuccessful readers differed in theirstrategy use. Successful readers reported using more strategies, more top-down strategies andmore DBE-instructed strategies than did unsuccessful readers. Keywords: Strategies, reading strategies, reading strategy instruction, successful readers, unsuccessful readers, top-down reading strategies, bottom-up reading strategies, andscaffolding.
