General profile of basketball referees and to come up against assault situation

SUMMARY GENERAL PROFILE OF BASKETBALL REFEREES AND TO COME UP AGAINST ASSAULT SITUATION EKMEKÇİ, Ridvan Post-graduate, Main Branch of Sport Management Thesis Consultant: Asist.Prof.Dr. Selhan OZBEY ALKURT January 2004, 124 pages The purpose of this study was; findout the demografic qualiies of the basketball referees at all lavels (inc. FIBA, ULEB, Level A, B, C, Federation, Local and Candidate) and analyse the agression situation they face, also the agression they create themselves. Also, to develop ideas to prevent agression situation another purpose of this study. Total 1193 surveys was sent and 461 surveys was returned. The research has been carried out on 461 basketball referees who answered their own survey. The research was made use of survey technique to gather the necessary data. The survey formed on 25 questions. 15 questions to define aggressiveness situation and 10 questions to identify the demografic qualities. The information, which was ready to be tested, was analyzed using percentage, frequency, crosstabs and arithmetic mean statistical methots.According to the research findings: The basketball referees who contributed to the research, 90 (19.5%) were female, 371 (80.5%) were male. The group of 22-26 year-old-people had the highest persentage of 51.6%. 48.1% of the basketball referees were local referees. Considering referees education levels, it was seen that 67.1% was university graduates. As professional status, teachers professionship had taken first place by 15.2%. 55.1% of referees were students. 31.2% referees were earning in term of monthly income between 75 1 million- 1 billion. 8 5. 8% of referees were English speaker at the level of intermediate. 66.1% of referees have had 1-3 year(s) officiating experience. 45% referees were officiating more then 6 matches per month. 51.3% of referees were 1-2 day(s) weekly and 40.6% of referees were 30-40min. doing training (work out). Among the subject of their seminars, sport physicology was taken fırt place by 39.7%. When we look to assault on refereees situation, it was seen that 41.3% of referees had been assaulted. According to the distrubition of the type of assaults 31.4%o were verbal, 2.6%» were physical and 7.3% were verbal-physical. Players and coachs together were highest group who assaulted referees, by 54.4%. The reson of assault with highest ration "loosig ambition and get upset" by 58.0%. 81.3% of assault were accured "during the game". 54% of assaultant recived no punnishment.
