Printmaking and pop art

20th century was a dynamic stage with continuous changes in working conditions, production styles, consumption types, shortly in lifestyles of individuals. This dynamism and changes were surely reflected in the world of art and gave birth to various art movements successively; pop art was one of those trends. Pop Art occurred in 1950s, which was the period of the start of serial production and its visible significant effects on individual life. The domain of this branch of art included different popular culture products such as finished materials, mass communication tools, advertisements. Pop artists had the chance to choose topics among a wide range of new products such as newspaper clippings, comic strips, advertisements, consumption materials and they used many methods while producing their art such as paint blaster, template, collage and printmaking techniques. In this research, the relation between Pop Art and printmaking, which is in line with the philosophy of the movement technically, is analyzed. Based on the works and discussions of artists in America and England during that period, these questions are attempted to be answered: Did the approach towards printmaking change with the occurrence of Pop Art? Did the technical aspects of printmaking serve to the goals of Pop Artists? And, what are the effects of Pop Art on printmaking and the effects of printmaking on Pop Art? The study is made of three different sections; in the first section, development and popularization of the printmaking studios in America in which Pop Artists created their works is analyzed in order to be able to understand the era. In the second section, popular culture is analyzed in order to reveal the area that fed Pop Art. In the last section, the relation between Pop Art and printmaking is analyzed on the basis of examples from English and American artists of the period.
