Abstract (EN)
After the military coup of 1960 and the memorandum of 1971, civilian politics in Turkey was tried to be carried out by coalition and minority governments, but these governments were not successful in solving Turkey's problems. In the period between 1970 and 1980, when the people were struggling with economic difficulties, the right-left conflicts led by university students increased their intensity day by day and in time the events spread to the general public. Streets, educational institutions and workplaces became places where right-left incidents were intensely experienced. The intervention of the military and the police was not sufficient and the attitudes of politicians in the administration of the country led to an increase in violence. In 1978, Alevis were attacked in Kahramanmaraş and the lack of intervention by the security forces led to a conflict environment based on the mutual struggle and power of the attacking and defending groups. The incidents that continued all over the country after the Maraş incidents caused more and more people to lose their lives every day. On 27 May 1980, MHP Deputy Chairman and former Minister of Customs and Monopoly Gün Sazak lost his life as a result of assassination and the conflict environment throughout the country intensified and Çorum was one of the provinces most affected by this negative situation. Although Güz Sazak had nothing to do with Çorum, first right-left and then Alevi-Sunni incidents took place in Çorum which caused dozens of people to lose their lives. Different claims about the beginning of the events, the attitude of the military and the police during the Çorum events, the situation of the hospitals, the erroneous broadcasts made by TRT and the decisions taken by the local authorities constitute the focal point of the discussions. The effects of these events, which caused great damage to the unity and solidarity of the people of Çorum and to the material and spiritual fabric of the city, are still seen today. Gazi Street is a symbolic border, separating the neighbourhoods inhabited by Alevi and Sunni people. This separation in the last half century can only be solved if the new generations understand each other and do not adopt a marginalising attitude.
