West Rough Cilicia cities: Astudy on urban typology and strategic positions

In this study, the typologies of the city which originated from the topography of the cities of West Rough Cilicia and the strategic advantage of this topography were investigated. This study of the West Rough Cilicia region, which has not been studied sufficiently, has addressed the cities one by one and focused on two of the most fundamental issues to better understand the world of antiquity. Among the reasons behind setting up cities in antiquity were strategic, economic, political and self-defending elements. It is for people to better defend themselves when they need to live as a community. This was also necessary in Western Cilicia and this condition must have been ensured when the settlements were first selected. Because piracy activities in the Mediterranean world had a negative impact on human life. As long as the ports or bays of the cities were not captured by the pirates, they were of great benefit to the city. It was an advantage for pirates when cities were captured by pirates. These cities have to be strategically placed in high-rise areas. While the cities were classified as typological, the morphology of the region had a significant effect. The urban types of our study area were determined and the strategic importance of the period for the Mediterranean basin was emphasized.
