SUMMARY THE USAGE OF WEST KARADENİZ REGİON HAZELNUT SHELLS AS ACTIVE CARBON Key words: Hazelnut shell, carbonization, active carbon, adsorption The shells of hazelnut which in one of the most important agricultural industry products, are used the for heating. A small percent is used to produce MDF which is used in decoration and furniture sector. But wood-like materials as hazelnut shell can also be used to produce active carbon. In this study, the physical and chemical specification of hazelnut shells which were obtained from West Karadeniz region, were examined. Then specific size of hazelnut shells were impragnated with ZnCb. After this step the shells were carbonized with CO2 gas at various temparatures between 923 K and 1103 K. Active carbon yield were first washed with dilute-HCl solution and then washed with H20 and dried at 383 K. As a second procedure, hazelnut shells with have 10-25 mesh size were chemically activated with 50%, 60% and 70% H2S04 and the products were washed with water and were dried at 383 K. For both procedure, the specific surface area and adsorption capacity by using methylene blue were determined.
