Abstract (EN)

The importance of modern science and technology is today accepted throughout the world. Some view them as forces that can solve human problems and improve the quality of life, others as elements that can destroy mankind. Yn the Muslim World, the debate often takes the form of whether modern science and technology are essential for the achievement of national goals or whether they are destructive of traditional values and institutions and should be replaced by a Muslim Science. Whatever one's views on this matter, it is essential to understand the nature of science and technology and to conceptualize them accurately for if one does not do so the debate will be intellectualy sterile. History has much to teach us in this regard. It is the purpose of this communication to identify two fundamental characterisitics of technology through an analysis of the manner in which the printing press functioned in the ottoman empire and impact.
