Exopolysaccaride (EPS) production and antibiyotik resistance of some pathogenic bacteria

In this research, EPS production, acid and bile resistance, auto-aggregation, coaggregation, tolerence to different pH values and antibiotic resistance of totally 12 pathogen bacteria including Escherichia coli ATCC 11229, Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644, Micrococcus luteus NRLL-B 4375, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Bacillus cereus RSKK 863, Bacillus subtilis RSKK 244, Bacillus megaterium RSKK 578, Salmonella enteritidis ATCC 13076 and Salmonella typhimurium CCM5445 strains has been determined. EPS production was seen in all bacteria. The highest EPS production was determined after 48 hours in P. aeuroginosa ATCC 27853 (68,8 mg/L). The lowest (15,5 mg/L) EPS production was determined after 48 hours in Bacillus cereus RSKK 863. Resistence of the strains to different antibiotics was tested. All of the tested strains showed the highest sensitivity to Tetracycline (100%) and Gentamicin (92%). Gentamicin (92%), Ampicillin (58%) and Polymyxin (58%). vii Auto-aggregation and coaggregation properties of the tested bacteria was determined. The highest (62.96%) auto-aggregation was seen in B. subtilis RSKK 244 strain and the lowest (6.12%) auto-aggregation observed in E. coli 0157:H7 strain. Tested bacteria were evaluated to the coaggregation with L.acidophilus ATCC 4356. The highest coaggregation occured in M. luteus NRLL-B 4375 (64%) culture. S. typhimurium CCM5445 showed the lowest degree of coaggregation (14%). Bile resistance of all of the strains was determined in the mediums containing 0.06%, 0.15% and 0.30% bile. Pathogen strains could tolerate the bile in the medium to a certain level. İn 0.06% bile concentration (37%) and the lowest inhibition was shown by S. enteritidis ATCC 13076 (8%). In 0.15% bile concentration, B. subtilis RSKK 244 showed the highest inhibition (82%). All of these results are evaluated and the relationship between EPS production by pathogenic bacteria and resistances to different pH, bile salts, autoaggregation, coaggregation and antibiotic resistances were not observed.
