Abstract (EN)

Whether we are aware or not, radiation is a phenomenon we come across in every moment of life. The reason of this is the exposure to slight natural radiation resulted from the cosmic rays and the Earth's crust. As technology develops, in addition to the benefits, there are some harms of the technological devices offered to the usage of humanity. The nuclear technology used in the field of health and used to get electrical energy today, are the sources of the artificial radiation. In this thesis study, it is aimed to measure the radiation holding features of the construction materials used commonly. The values of the absorption coefficient (µ) are calculated for the structure materials such as concrete, normal concrete, plaster-of-paris, marble, tile, brick, plywood, polystyrene, poplar, beech, oak and pine that are used as structure metarials. The measurements are made by using 137Cs and 60Co radiation sources and NaI(Tl) gamma spectrometer. The absorption coefficients are calculated using the Beer- Lambert equation. According to the results that obtained, the methods of constructing safer buildings with the existing structure materials and how ready are the buildings we live in to the probable radiation leak, is investigated and discussed.
