Leadership styles of physical education and sports school managers and study of conflict management strategies

This research was done to determine the using level of leadership styles of physical education and sports school managers and conflict management strategies according to managers? and academicians? perception, to research influence of personal characteristics on their leadership styles and conflict management strategies and to put forward the relationship between the transformational and transactional leadership styles and conflict management strategies.Population was consisted of 89 academy managers and 521 academicians who work in 38 Physical Education and Sports School and 2 Sports Sciences and Technology School that are connected to state universities in Turkey, between 2007-2008 educational term.In order to collect data, Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire-MLQ 5X ? SHORT was developed by Bernard Bass ve Bruce Avolio (1995), The Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II was developed by M. Afzalur Rahim (1983) and ?Personal Information Form? was developed by the researcher in order to determine personal characteristics.U test was used to compare dual groups which were examined whether they are differentioned or not according to their personal characteristics? influence on using level of conflict management strategies and leadership styles of school managers. Kruskal-Wallis variance analyse statistical method was used to compare more than two groups. In order to find source of significance difference, Bonferroni Corrective Mann Whitney U test was used. Spearman Brown Order Differences Correlation factor technique was used to put forward the relationship between leadership styles of the managers and academicians and their conflict management strategies. Significance level was accepted as 0.05.Research results:1.The managers think that they realize transformational and transactional leadership style behaviours with a higher degree and significant average than the academicians.2.There is significant difference school managers? transformational and transactional leadership styles according to managers? and academicians? personal characteristics in some dimensions.3.Conflict management strategies of the managers according to their perception can be ordered as follows: compromising, making concession, avoiding, dominating. However, conflict management strategies of the academicians according to their perception can be ordered as follows; integrating, dominating, compromising, avoiding and making concession.4.There is significant difference school managers? conflict management strategies using degrees according to managers? and academicians? personal characteristics in some dimensions.5.There is a significant relation between school managers? leadership styles and their conflict management strategies compare to perception of managers and academicians.
