The effect of different teaching methods used in phsycial education and sports lessons on academic learning time

This study aims at seeing the effects of different teaching methods on the academic learning time. Therefore, to determine the effectiveness of physical education and sports teachers the areas of general content, content-based knowledge and motor knowledge, motor extra activity behaviors and motor activity behaviors along with the academic learning time allocated were studied.Research design of the study is general survey model, cross sectional method and correlational survey. The participants are 30 fourth year students studying at Abant İzzet Baysal University School of Physical Education and Sports, Physical Education and Sports Teaching Program during 2010?2011 academic year. Forty minute lessons of 30 pre-service teachers using method of giving commands (n=10), exercise method (n=10) and pair work method (n=10) were videotaped. These recordings were examined using the observation form of Academic Learning Time in Physical Education (ALT-PE) and analyzed by One Way Analysis of Variance and Tukey HSD.The results revealed significant differences among academic learning time and three different teaching methods utilized by pre-service teachers. Though the group with instruction through giving commands devoted the most time to skills training, they had the lowest ALT (13.4%) as they spend the most time for waiting, breaks and unrelated behaviors. Pair work method group was found to have ALT (15.5%) devoting the most time to transitions and cognitive behaviors. Finally, exercise method group had the highest ALT (25.4%) while devoting the least time to waiting and unrelated behaviors and the most time to proper motor activities.Physical Education and Sports lessons should be structured centering more on exercise method considering the academic learning time. Moreover, solution to spend less time for waiting, breaks, unrelated behaviors and cognitive behaviors need to be sought.Keywords: Physical Education, Academic Learning Time, Teacher Effectiveness, Teaching Styles, Prospective Teacher.
