Research of the competency perception of physical education teachers (Giresun sample)

Purpose: In this study, the differences in perceptions of the competence of physical education teachers working in the schools in Giresun city center and its districts with the variables such as "gender, age, professional seniority, level of doing sports, sports branch, the reason for choosing the teaching profession and monthly income" were examined. Material and Method: The research group consisted of 119 volunteer physical education teachers selected in accordance with employee sampling method in Giresun Provincial Center in 2018-2019 academic year and in secondary schools and high schools in their districts. The "Personal Information Document" created by the thesis author and "Physical Education Teachers Proficiency Scale" created by Ünlü (2008) were used to collect research data.. Average and standard deviations of the sub-dimensions of the scale were given, and Cronbach-Alpha values were examined for the scale and its sub-dimensions. In addition, normality assumptions were examined for the scale and its sub-dimensions. Since the scales examined do not have a normal distribution, Mann-Whitney U test statistics, income level with more than two levels, age, occupational year, sports history, sports specialty branch and why did teachers choose teaching Kruskal-Wallis test statistics were used to analyze variables. Results: According to the data obtained from the subjects, a significant difference was found in the mean scores of the teachers' responsiveness based on the "level of sports history" variable regarding the "program / content knowledge" sub-dimension (P <0.05). A significant difference was found in the average distribution of the scores of the teachers regarding their competence according to the variable of "sports expertise branch" and the scores of the total scale (P <0.05). According to the variable of "why physical education teacher is chosen", there were again significant differences between the answers given by the teachers regarding the competency, the "learning-teaching process, getting to know their students, school-society and family relationships, individual and professional development" sub-dimensions and the total means of the scale ( P <0.05). Conclusion: Looking at the results of the research, teachers say that they are "very competent" in terms of the variables they are asked to evaluate, and that the teachers' answers regarding why they chose this profession are different when they examine the primary reason for all sub-dimensions was "for those who love sports" (47.1%) "because they have no other alternatives" (30.1%) and finally "for those who love teaching physical education" (27.7%) the result of their choice of this profession.
