Organizational culture in higher education: A case study in physical education and sport departments

The purpose of this study was to determine the organizational culture of higher education institutions of physical education and sport departments in Turkey. To reach the this purpose and make some advices, academic personnels which work in physical education and sport departments; decisions about their institutions organizational culture was taken by using cultural values and artefacts. This study was consisted of all physical education and sport departments and their academic personnels in Turkey (total 49 institutions). 14 out of 49 institutions and their academic personnels were selected as a sample by using random selection method. Total 354 academic personnels were participated in this study. A questionnaire which has 2 sections and 42 sentences was applied to all participators. 255 of them (72.033 %) answered the questionnaire, but 242 out of 255 (68.361%) were evaluated. SPSS 9.0 pocket computer program was used for statistical analysis by following these steps which are given below: For determining the personality informations frequency (f) and percentage (%), importance of cultural values and artefackts mean and standart deviation, significant difference between variables one way variance analysis (ANOVA) and if a significant difference was observed, Scheffe Test was used to find the variable which was created the difference.As a result of this study: - Academic personnels accepted the cultural values and artefacts not much important, that's why we can say physical education and sport departments don't have a strong culture. -Academic personnels accepted the innovation is a too important value, this is also typical pecularity of higher education institutions. So we can say that physical education and sport departments are indicated modern higher education institutions pecularities. -Academic personnels which work in institutions were had a meaningful history (£11 years) indicated that some positive difference than other academic personnels which work in institutions were had a less meaningful history (£5 years and 6-10 years) accepting the cultural values and artefacts. -An important significant difference was not observed between gender about accepting the cultural values and artefacts. -Academic personnels which work in same institution for a long time (£11 years) were indicated positive significant difference about accepting the cultural values and artefacts than more less time worker (>5 years and 6-10 years). -Academic personnels which have higher status were indicated that positive significant difference about accepting the cultural values and artefacts than the lower status ones.
