Determining the problems and expectations of teachers of physical education and sports related to the celebrations of 23 April National Sovereignty and Children's Festival and 19 May Remembrance of Atatürk Youth and Sports Festival

This study investigates to determine the expectations of teachers of physical education and sports working at primary and secondary schools bound to National Education Ministry, by determining the problems they face at the preparation stages, during the ceremony and after the celebrations of 23 April National Sovereignty and Children's Festival and 19 May National Youth and Sports Festival.In this study descriptive research method was used to show the present situation. The study consists of two stages-theoretical and practical. At the first stage, the review of literature related to the topic was made. At the second stage, first, open ended questionnaires were prepared to determine the problems and expectations of teachers of physical education and sports, then with these questionnaires and by taking the expert views into consideration, close-ended questionnaires were prepared and applied.The scope of the study consists of 1940 teachers of physical education and sports working at primary and secondary education government schools in İstanbul in 2006-2007. The sample of the study consists of 200 teachers chosen randomly among these 1940 physical education teachers. The collected data of the questionnaires consisting of 20 expectation and 20 problem items with demographic information is analyzed on computer by SPSS program.With this study, by determining the problems and expectations, examining the celebrations organized and participated by formal education institutions bound to National Education Ministry is thought to be helpful to solve the present problems and enable the celebrations to be made more affective and satisfying.On the base of the findings of the study, the top 5 problems and 5 expectations were determined. The physical education teachers were asked to give their opinions about whether these problems and expectations showed any differences according to the schools they were working at, gender and the frequency of their attendance to festivals. Propositions were made on the base of the findings and the result of the study.
