Characterization of Xanthomanas axonopodis (syn: campestris) pv. begoniae, causal agent of bacterial spot and blight disease on begonia (Begoniae sp.) and resistance of different begonia cultivars to the disease

Seventeen bacterialstrains were isolated from infected leaves and stems by several isolations on YDCand King?s medium B. In pathogenicity tests, all strains were found as pathogenic ontubercular begonia leaves by spray inoculations within 7-10 days . All strains wereidentified as Xanthomonas axonopodis pv.begoniae by classical bacteriologicalSystem based on fatty acid methyl ester analysis (FAME).Disease resistance of different begonia cultivars including tuberious, wax andrex begonias were also investigated. Begonia masoniana were found as lesssusceptible to leaf infections of the disease. Begonia carollina and Begoniamasoniana were found as resistance to stem infection of the disease.Key words: begonia, bacteria, ELISA, disease resistanceII
