Behçet Ünsal (1912-2006): A biographical and bibliographic evaluation

Abstract (EN)

Evaluation of the biographies and works of architects who shaped the early Republic periodof Turkish architecture is necessary to understand the past and the present. When thementioned period investigated, many architects could be found with works on several areas. Itis worth to investigate one of these architects named Behçet Ünsal especially with his workson architectural literature.In this study, a biography and bibliography of Behçet Ünsal were compiled with investigatinghis designs, participated competitions, academic works, books and articles. This thesis consistsof six chapters. The aim and the methodology of the study and the biography of Behçet Ünsalwere given, respectively, in the first and second chapters. In the third chapter, theeducationalism of Ünsal was investigated. Furthermore, the works of Ünsal on architecture andurbanism were shown chronologically in the fourth chapter. His articles were examined indetail in the fifth chapter, and finally, in light of the foregoing documents and information,architectural aptitude of Ünsal and his works about the architectural history were evaluated inthe last chapter.Personal information and archives were used, in addition to a number of theses, articles,periodicals and books which were taken as basic sources. Many periodicals were investigatedsince their establishment dates, especially, Arkitekt (Mimar) which is the oldest architecturaljournal of Turkey.In this study, the grammatical faults were not corrected in the quoted passages with theexception of some typographic errors.Keywords: Republic Period, The Turkish Architecture, The History of Architecture,Architectural Literature.
