Behiç Ak's children's books in the context of virtues and character strengths

Abstract (EN)

This research's which aims to investigate Behiç Ak's children's books in the context of virtues and character strengths, problem statement is defined as What are "virtues and character strengths in Behiç Ak's children's books?" Research's method is document ananlysis. In this qualitative study was based on descriptive model, data was acquired by document analysis was analysed by using content analysis method. The data source of research is consisted of Behiç Ak's children's books named as "Yaşasın Ç Harfi Kardeşliği", "Postayla Gelen Deniz Kabuğu", "Eve Giden Küçük Tren", "Bebek Annem", "Çatıdaki Gezegen", "Bulutlara Şiir Yazan Çocuk" and "Her Şeyi Yanlış Anlayan Kedi". "Character Strengths Form" based on 24 character strengths classified in 6 virtue category developed by Peterson and Seligman (2004) was used as data collection tool in the research. Inspected books were analysed in terms of "Wisdom", "Courage", "Humanity", "Justice", "Temperance" and "Transcendence" virtues in this form and 24 character strength in these virtues . In the research result it was seen that "Wisdom (n=369)" was at the top and then "courage (n=223)", "Humanity (n=201)", "Transcendence (n=187)", "Justice (n=71) and "Temperance (n=67)" virtues were included respectively. On the other hand, it was determined that "Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence (n=150)" was the top character strength and "Spirituality (n=0)" character strength was lacked in inspected children's books. The results obtained were discussed in the direction of related literature and suggestions were offered. Key Words: Children's books, Behiç Ak, virtue, character strengths.
