Electrooxidation of benzene on boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode

Abstract (EN)

This work was carried out in two parts. The first part was performed in Germany; electrochemical behavior of benzene on boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode was investigated using rotating disc electrode. In a sealed glass cell atmosphere, 1 M HClO4 solution containing various concentrations of benzene was used in experiments conducted at different rotating and scan rates. As a result of water decomposition, a peak relating to hydroxyl radicals was determined at 2,38 V. BDD electrode in 1 M HClO4 solution containing benzene was carried out at different rotating rates experiments; an anodic limit current peak was observed at 2,4 V where the hydroxyl radical and benzene reacted. This anodic limit current peaks in the Levich equation shows us that the electrooxidation of electron transfer is 4-5 electron per molecule. BDD electrode in 1 M HClO4 solution containing benzene was carried out at different scan rates experiments; an oxidation peak was determined at roughly 2,2 V. The observed oxidation peak at this potential could be associated with the irreversible benzene electrochemical oxidation.The second part was performed in Turkey. BDD electrode in 1 M HClO4 solution containing 3,2×10-3 M benzene opened to the atmosphere; electrolysis experiments were done in three different potentials (1,8 V; 2,2 V and 2,8 V) depending on time. In these potentials, the rest amount of benzene with time in media was determined by using UV-Visible Spectrophotometer and Gas Chromatography methods. According to the data, the amount of benzene decreased by increasing the potential and time. The maximum decreasing occurred at 2,8 V potential. Gas Chromatography and UV-Visible Spectrophotometer results have also shown that the results are close to each other.
