A stage adaptation based on Bertolt Brecht's street scene model: The Good Soldier Švejk

Bertolt Brecht, in an article he wrote in 1938, explains the foundations of his epic theater approach, which aims to transform the type of relationship between the audience and the scene in classical dramatic theater with a practical example. In this example, a traffic accident that can be happen on the corner of any street is discussed. A witness who has seen how the accident happened, tells their observation from a subjective point of view so the audience can make a judgement about the event. The narrative is descriptive of a solo performance. In this study, Jaroslav Hasek's novel The Good Soldier Svejk was adapted to the scene text in line with current conditions and a storytelling experiment was made, taking example of Brecht's street scene. For this, first of all, Brecht's adaptation of Svejk and the street scene model was examined and the basic distinguishing concepts describing Brecht's epic theatre approach were determined. In the play made after the theoretical study, the testimony of a fictional character who witnessed the events happened to Svejk and recorded the events on his notebook is focused. The storytelling experiment is interpreted as the narrative of the fictional witness' relative who is called for interrogation as a witness within the scope of a global investigation into whereabouts of Svejk. In the play, it is aimed to discuss the ordinary citizenship / privileged citizenship dialectic.
