Numerical investigation of the thermal energy storage effect in concrete material from an energetic and exergetic point of view

Abstract (EN)

In this study, research was conducted on how concrete can be used not only as a carrier material but also as an energy storage tool. Energy and exergy performances were examined with thermal energy storage system in concrete material at different fluid speeds and different heating regimes. Analyses were made for two column sizes (300x300 mm and 300x600 mm) commonly used in the construction sector. Water was selected as the heating fluid in the column. Numerical analyses were performed with FloEFD package program. Columns were tested completely open to external conditions and subjected to heating analysis under these conditions for 48 hours. It was determined that the most efficient and homogeneous heating performance was in the three-hour charge/discharge regime and 0.5 m/s flow rate within 24 hours. An increase was observed in the amount of energy obtained as the column volume and the number of pipes passing through it increased. The efficient column type was determined by calculating energy and exergy efficiencies. The heating performance of the system was compared with different studies. In addition, an example apartment was taken as an example, estimated cost calculations of the system were made and its economic feasibility was made. This study provides a comprehensive analysis aimed at increasing the energy storage capacity of concrete building elements and it is envisaged that it can be an important alternative in terms of sustainable energy. 2025, xiii + 91 Pages Keywords: Thermal Energy Storage, Concrete Column, Exergetic Performance
