Abstract (EN)

Application of displacement-based seismic design and analysis that is derived from plastic hinge method is still employed extensively to estimate the performance assessment procedures to evaluate the inelastic displacement demand and capacity. In other word, prediction of behavior of plastic hinges, subjected to large inelastic deformations, caused by extreme loads is used. These loads that affect structures significantly, such as earthquakes, play an important role in assessing the maximum stable deformation capacities of framed concrete structures. In structural analysis, non-linear analysis is more preferable than linear analysis because of more realistic assessments. Because of dealing with high amount of effective factors on non-linear assessments, some assumptions and damage limit boundaries are required to assess the performance under seismic actions. In this thesis, Turkish Seismic Design, code DBYBHY 2007 (Deprem Bölgelerinde Yapılacak Binalar Hakkında Yönetmelik) and Eurocode8 (Seismic Design of Buildings) are considered for assessing performance limits. Moreover, the most accepted previous models of plastic hinge length are employed, to investigate the accuracy of each. Finally, a new model proposed for determine the potential plastic hinge length of reinforced concrete columns. In the first part, differences of codes, ways of approaches about the performance of reinforced concrete columns are assessed based on the results given by PEER database. For this purpose, damage limit states and boundaries are evaluated from codes. In the second part, with comparing various plastic hinge length models, and the factors, which significantly influence plastic hinge length variation of reinforced concrete columns, it is tried to propose new model by improving the existing equations. The estimation of methods given by codes and the considered plastic hinge length models, are compared with each other, and with the experimental results. Finally, in this study, it is tried to extract a more accurate model for RC columns performance.
