The binders of handwriting Koran (Quran) with rosette ornamentations in Beyazit State Library

The history of Turkish Art of Binding has its roots back to very old times.It is important and necessary for Turkish Culture and Turkish Art of Ornamentation to maintain The Art of Binding and transfer it from generation to generation.It is astonishing that there hasn?t been carried out a thorough research on the Turkish Binding Art and especially on its ornamentations.In Turkish Culture, only the book itself can?t be thought without its binding and ornamentations.Its cover and protection is of the same importance as the book itself.Turkish Art of Binding has an important place both in our national culture and also in the world?s cultural heritage.Turkish Art is a whole.The patterns and designs in different branches of art has some common features in general.However these patterns shows divergence according to the places where they are used or applied.As being different from previous reseaches on binding, its attempt to analyze patterns and compositions increases the importance of the thesis.It is expected that the study will be beneficial to the researchers.15th century is the era that Ottomans started to reveal their best works in the Art of Binding.16th century became the classical period for the Art of Binding as well.The Art of Binding reached its peak in the era of Suleiman the Magnificent and became a classical style.When we look through the binders of 17th century, we can realize a decomposition that bracket and salbek (tiny ornamentations on the top and end of a rosette) no longer exists, rosette is different in shape and bigger in size. Lacquered( Edirne kari) binders became prevalent in 18th century.In 19th and 20th ceturies, a reversal to the past can be observed.Old designs were regenerated.Applications on the binders of handwritings which were repaired in libraries shows that these works of art were repaired in an inapproprate way. Therefore, a great effort must be put forth both for protecting and introducing these books which were preserved in libraries.
