Abstract (EN)

The aim of this thesis is to develop a conservation proposal for the mid 19th century building, the Arapoğlu Residence in Beyoğlu and Ahududu Street, on which the building stands. In the introduction part, the scope of work, methodology and the gained information are introduced. The European life style and the increasing population in teh capital city were the main reasons that influenced the development of architecture in Beyoğlu. Following this part, third part includes the detailed information and the general analysis of the street, Ahududu (Sadri Alışık) on which the building stands. The Arapoğlu Residence is a very good example of the civil architecuture in 19th century in Beyoğlu, both with its decoration style, its construction technique and also its planning. The building is in need of urgent restoration because of the serious decays that have continued since years. Although it is today in a poor state of repair, no major alterations have been made to the interior or facade of the building since it was built. Therefore, the building may be taken as fortunate. It still has many original details from the time it was first constructed. The analyse of the present condition of the building, with the help of scientific investigations and documentaries is mentioned in the fourth section. In the following section, the reconstruction project has been developed with the concern of the least intervention. The general information about Arapoğlu Residence was obtained from the past dewellers of the residence and the street. The similar civil architecuture examples from the same period and the same area were also taken in comparison to develop ideas about the lost elements of the building. The Arapoğlu residence is a unique example with its significant architectural elements from 19th century. It is out of question that it has to be preserved. The restoration of this building will certainly bring positive social and cultural changes to Ahududu Street and Beyoğlu, as well.
