Abstract (EN)

The files of 70 patients who underwent cataract surgery with biaxial small incision technique between April 2015 and June 2016 at Namık Kemal University, Research and Practice Hospital Ophthalmology Department were investigated retrospectively. All of patients had grade 4 nuclear cataract according to LOCS III stage. The files of 70 patients who underwent cataract surgery with bimanual biaxial microincision technique were retrospectively reviewed. Thirty-five of seventy patients underwent phacoemulsification by elliptic method and 35 patients by torsional method. Intraocular lens implantation was performed. The best corrected visual acuity, corneal thickness, preoperative and postoperative on day 1, week 1, month 1 and month 3, corneal endothelial cell counts were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively 1 st week, 1 st month, and 3 rd month; Corneal incision morphology was evaluated postoperatively 1st day, 1st week, 1st month and 3rd month. In the elliptic group at 1 week postoperatively, BCVA was better at statistically significant level. At 1 day, 1 month and 3 months postoperatively, BCVA was similar in both groups. CCT recovered at 3 months postoperatively to preoperative values. No significant difference was observed between the groups in terms of endothelial cell density in the postoperative follow-ups. The absence of epithelial alignment at the corneal incision was significantly greater in the elliptical group postoperatively first day. This was thought to be related to the longer ultrasound time in the elliptical method. Descemet membrane detachment was seen at high frequency in both groups, but the difference between the groups was not statistically significant. 62 Both torsional and elliptical methods of bilateral microincision phacoemulsification and IOL implantation have shown similar effects on long term corneal structures. After surgery, similar improvement was observed in corneal structures in both groups, resulting in an increase in visual acuity.
