A bibliometric approach to tracking business intelligence research trends

On purpose of improving decision making, BI is a fundamental necessity for any type of organization. Research on BI field may be complex due to variety of fields where it is applied and variety of aspects which it owns. BI has shown continuous enhancements and has gained attention of both industry and academia research. This study is focused on technological aspect of BI. It aims to explore the research trends in scientific articles related to BI and co-occurrence relationships among the revealed research trends. The search query used for collection of data set from Web of Science, includes basic technological elements of BI consisting of infrastructure, data management, data analyses and information delivery. Quantitative approach and bibliometric methodology were used to analyze keywords in scientific articles. After the determination of research trends based on high frequency, a bibliometric network was constructed by co-occurrence analysis and accompanied by four types of visualizations network, overlay, item density and cluster density. The results consist of twenty-nine research trends which were used to construct the bibliometric network. The usage of descriptive statistics represented by tables provides detailed informatıon for each type of visualization. In conclusion this study may serve to gain insights into the research trends of BI field and the connections between them. The findings may contribute to scholars and practitioners to better understand the past and future of BI field and determine research gaps for further enhancements.
