Özet (EN)
This study addresses original works of art considered within the scope of graphic materials in information and documentation centers and examines their position in information and documentation processes. Works of art, which constitute humanity's cultural memory, possess not only aesthetic value but also document qualities with their historical, social, and intellectual content. In this context, original works of art are information resources that should be preserved, organized, and made accessible in memory institutions such as libraries, archives, and museums. The main purpose of the thesis is to examine the cataloging, description, classification, digitization, storage, and utilization processes of original works of art in information and documentation centers, and to evaluate the adequacy of the standards used in these processes (MARC 21, RDA, LC Subject Headings, etc.). The study proceeds from the proposition that original works of art should be regarded not only as aesthetic art objects but also as documents carrying information. In this regard, it has been demonstrated through practical examples how original works of art are described according to international cataloging standards and how they are adapted to information retrieval systems. The research was designed as descriptive in nature and was carried out through literature review, document analysis, and content analysis methods. Information and documentation centers from Turkey and around the world were evaluated as examples; existing catalog records, classification forms, and digital access practices were examined. This methodological approach made it possible to identify problems encountered in the information and documentation processes of original works of art at both the theoretical and practical level and to develop solution proposals. The findings reveal that original works of art require a different kind of evaluation than books, journals, and other written documents in information centers. It was observed that standards were insufficient, particularly in cataloging, storage, and access processes, and that physical and digital preservation practices did not achieve uniformity and consistency among institutions. This study makes the position of original works of art within the discipline of information and documentation management visible; it contributes both to academic literature and provides practical recommendations for information professionals working in libraries, archives, and museums. Thus, it aims to raise awareness towards managing original works of art in a more systematic, accessible, and sustainable manner as an integral part of cultural heritage.
