Dimensions of social capital in civil society organizations focused on knowledge, culture and education (The case of Istanbul)

Social capital is a value based on trust, social networks and the relationships they create. The discussion of what is Turkey's social capital potential can vary according to the social capital approach to establishing solidarity and bridges. The research focuses on the bridging social capital that appears as a form of social capital. The active use of this form of social capital facilitates access to resources and information that will increase progress capacity. Social networks formed by individuals who volunteer to Knowledge, Culture and Education focused non-governmental organizations which prepare educational programs, organize conferences, symposiums, and form reading groups, are a set of opportunities that provide various advantages. These non-governmental organizations increase participation in activities that increase academic efficiency, while also ensuring the development of interpersonal relations and long-term relationship channels. In the qualitative research that brings social capital to the forefront with its bridging feature, the participants in the activities of Knowledge, Culture and Education Focused Non-Governmental Organizations in Istanbul have been interviewed and it has been determined that they benefit from the social capital that bridges the access to resources and information based on various and complex relationships. Analysis results support the bridging social capital approach. The findings of the study show that the participants involved in non-governmental organizations can establish trust and create social capital through friendship bonds that have formed over time, based on academic benefits.
