The effect of information,motivationn,behavior skills model-based training on breastfeading success:A hypothetical model

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of knowledge, motivation and behavior skills on breastfeeding success on a hypothetical model. This cross-sectional study was carried out with 229 mothers who delivered at Afyonkarahisar State Hospital between January 1 - October 31, 2018. The data were evaluated with Structural Equation Model. The average age of the women was 25.92 ± 4.91 years. 22.7% of the women stated that they had received information about breastfeeding before and 19.7% said that they had obtained this information from health personnel. It is observed that information has a negative effect on behavioral skills (β = -0.226; p <0.001) and self-care behaviors (β = -0.214; p <0.001). The positive attitude of the mother (β = 0.42) and her husband (β = 0.56) regarding breastfeeding is related to higher motivation (p <0.001). Behavioral skills on self-care behaviors (β = 0.156, p <0.05); Self-care behaviors also have a positive effect on health outcomes (β = 0.149, p <0.05). In addition, a negative correlation is found between knowledge and motivation (r = -0.571; p <0.001). Directly on the behavioral skills of knowledge (β = -0.226, p = 0.021); There is a direct (β = -0.215, p = 0.019) and indirect effect on self-care behaviors (β = -0.035, p = 0.011). Behavioral skills directly affect self-care behaviors (β = 0.156, p = 0.009). Health outcomes are directly related to self-care behaviors (β = 0.149, p = 0.093); behavior skills (β = 0.023, p = 0.036) are indirectly affected. In the second stage of the study, it is aimed to evaluate the effect of the education based on Information, Motivation and Behavioral Skills (IMB) Model on breastfeeding success. The second stage of the single-group pretest-posttest experimental research design was carried out with 50 nursing mothers who gave birth at the Maternity and Obstetrics Department of Afyonkarahisar State Hospital between 1 March and 1 June 2018. Breastfeeding training program based on IMB Model was applied to the group. In these trainings, the subjects such as lactation process, breast milk, importance of breastfeeding, breastfeeding techniques, emotional dimension of breastfeeding, benefits, importance of breastfeeding mother were included. Data were collected through face-to-face interview method and observation by means of questionnaire. Before the training and four weeks after the training, data collection tools were applied and the effect of the training was evaluated. Descriptive statistics, Student t, Mann Whitney U tests, Paired t test and Willcoxon test were used to evaluate the data. The average age of the women was 26.7 ± 5.4, the average number of pregnancies was 2.42 ± 1.3, and the average number of living children was 2.00 ± 0.88. There is a significant increase in all of the scale scores in the posttest measurements of the group (p <0.05). These results indicate that IMB model based education has a positive effect on breastfeeding success by improving mothers' individual and social motivation, behavioral skills, self-management behaviors and health outcomes. For these reasons, it is considered useful to carry out training programs based on IMB model that will increase the knowledge level of mothers in breastfeeding, increase motivation resources and improve behavior skills.
