Museums as an example of the effects of the formation of the information society and globalization in urban space

The world is experiencing two progeresses in 20th century. The first one isthe existance of the information age triggered by the fast development ofinformation technologies. Second is the globalization ,which is caused by thenew social and economic issues after the wars world have seen, cooperatedand entegrated the nations on social,cultural and economic manner. Whilethe information age provides chances for transportation, communication,production and industrilization that comforts human life and saves time,globalization, with the information age's outcomes, caused new globaleconomies and a globalizing culture to born.These two progresses are observed most in urban spaces. Cities ,byexpressing their originalities, are forced to be differentiated from thestandardization caused by globalization therefore experiences social,economic and space-wise changes. Museums, like all other urban functionsand usages, are influenced by these progresses. It is possible to study theseeffects on museums from two points of view, either from exhibition areas orcollections that are exhibited.One of the most clear effects that information age and globalization have onmuseums is in structural sense. In this period, museums enlarged by bothstructurally and area-wise and they are integrated to other urban usages toserve as mixed function. Collections in museums begin to be formed byintangible items, social life and the culture itself rather than tangible items.In this research, museums , one of the urban usages influenced byglobalization and information age, are studied and the structuraldifferentiations that museums have experienced, new museum types thatexist and the effects of both urban and content-wise changes on urban spacesare discussed.
