The Effectiveness of the activities of computer assisted instruction for the five year students in social science lesson

Ill ABSTRACT In this research the effectiveness of the activities of Computer Assisted Instruction for the five year students in Social Science Lesson is examined. Pre-test and post-test experimental model consisting of experimental-control group was used in the research. The research was carried out during 2001-2001 education period in Ankara, Cubuk, Cubuk Primary Education School. Among three five-year classes, 5/B was selected as a control group and 5/C was selected as an experimental group according to their pre-test points. The research was done with 60 students in total (30 students in the experimental group and 30 students in the control group). In the research "Cumhuriyete Nasıl Kavuştuk?" which is the most comprehensive unit in five-year classes Social Science Programme was used. In the research "T.C. Tarihi" CD, which belongs to Interaktif Software Company, was used. In addition to this, acetates showing to general events occurred during the Independence War were used (Ap.: 7). In order to collect data fifty-questioned acquisition test was developed by the researcher (Ap.: 2). In order to determine the students' sex, their parents' social- economic position, their parents' literacy and their having a computer at home an enquiry was carried out (Ap.: 5). Pre-test was carried out to the control and experimental groups before starting the research. In total thirty lesson practice within five weeks (six lessons per week) was carried out to the groups (a lesson=forty minutes). In this period the lesson plans developed by researcher were done to experimental group by using CAI.IV However, their class teacher used traditional teaching methods in the control group. At the end of the period, post-test was carried out to both groups and data obtained from the post-test was done through SPSS programmer. At the end of the research, Computer-Assisted Instruction based Social Science education in five-year classes is more effective than traditional instruction based Social Science education were obtained. According to the findings, when the groups' points were compared a significant difference, which is experimental group's advantage, was found. Besides, it is found out that students attend the classes where CAI method is used more regularly. In addition to this, students are more enthusiastic in these classes.
