The effect of computer assisted instruction on academic achievements and attitudes of seventh-grade students in the field of mathematics "Charts and Graphics"

In parallel with the advances in computer technology, rapid developments in education have been experienced. It has been observed that importance given to computer assisted instruction has been increasing rapidly to ensure the active participation of students in the class and increase their interest. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of computer assisted instruction on academic achievement of seventh grade students and their attitude in the field of mathematics ?Charts and Graphics?. In order to identify this effect , the experimental method together with control group has been applied via the pre-test, post-test. This study was conducted at a public elemantary school in Ankara at the first semester in 2011-2012 academic year. 17 students in the experimantal group and 20 students in the control group, totally 37 students participated in the study. 25 questions test developed by the researcher was applied as pre-test before the instructions and post-test after 8 hours of class instruction. In addition ?Mathematic Attitude Scale? has been applied to determine students?attitudes towards mathematics before and after the applications. While the experimental group was having computer assisted instruction regarding ?Charts and Graphics? via ? MEB Vitamin software?, control group was having instruction process in the classroom with traditional teaching method. According to the findings of the study , It has been noticed the academic achievement of the experimental group having computer assisted instruction increased more than the achievement of the control group using traditional approach. With regard to attitudes towards mathematics, It hasn?t been found significant difference between experimental and control groups Key Words: Computer assisted instruction, MEB Vitamin software, Charts and Graphics, Traditional education method.
