Effect of electromagnetic radiation caused by computer screen on some hematological and biochemical parameters of human blood

Abstract (EN)
In today's modern world, electrical devices that take place in all areas of our daily life have brought many negativities to human life, while providing many conveniences. One of the most important of these negative effects is electromagnetic field (EMF) induced radiation, which can show its effect after a long time. Radiation, with its most basic definition, is the energy emitted from a source in the form of waves or particles. The type of radiation that has too low energy to cause a change in the structure of the atom it encounters is called non-ionizing or non-ionizing radiation, and this type of radiation is in the form of electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic radiation can directly or indirectly affect human health negatively. This effect can be at the molecular, cellular, tissue or system level. Most of the studies conducted in the last 30 years have concluded that electromagnetic radiation adversely affects human health. In this context, in our study, it is aimed to determine the possible effects of exposure to electromagnetic radiation from computer screens on blood parameters and melatonin hormone of people who work in front of a computer screen for long hours in daily and business life. Our study was conducted on 45 healthy volunteers (age range: 18-50). The first (control) group consisted of 15 healthy individuals who did not use computers. The second group consisted of 15 people who worked at the computer for 0-4 hours half day, and the third group consisted of people who worked at the computer for 8 hours or more full day. After the grouping, blood samples were taken from the subjects and the hematological and biochemical parameters of the analyzes were examined. In the first part of our study, no statistically significant difference was found between people who were exposed to radiation and those who were not exposed to radiation in 11 blood parameters (WBC, LYMPH, MONO, EOS, RBC, HGB, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, PLT) examined in the research groups. In the second part of our study, we examined the effects of computer screen-induced EMR on the melatonin hormone in the blood. Contrary to the blood parameters, a statistically significant difference was obtained in the comparison of the melatonin hormone values of the research groups. A statistically significant difference was found between the control group and the group working at the computer for 0-4 hours (p=0.05), and between the control group and the group working at the computer for 8 hours or more (p=0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups working 0-4 hours and working 8 hours or more (p=0.295>0.05). When the results we obtained in the study were evaluated as a whole, it was concluded that EMR did not significantly affect blood parameters in individuals, but could significantly reduce the synthesis of melatonin hormone.
