The reflections of colonialism, resistance and colonial movements in science fiction cinema in the social and historical process

Science fiction cinema is considered a genre that constructs future stories. But instead of telling stories based only on the future, it also tells the historical and social events that happened in the past. The subject of this research is the relationship of science fiction cinema with historical and social events. These historical and social cases; colonialism, resistance and colonial movements. Colonialism, resistance and colonial movements has existed throughout human history. However, within the scope of the study, the geographical discoveries initiated by the European states in the 15th century, the period of colonial movements initiated towards the Americas, and the period after it were examined. In the first part of the study, science fiction as a genre will be examined; the relationship between science, literature and cinema, which are the dynamics of the genre, with science fiction cinema has been revealed. Sub-genres and themes, which are the basic elements of science fiction cinema, are defined. The phenomena of colonialism, resistance and colonial movements, which are the focus of the thesis, are examined and defined. In order to understand how the genre is affected by past events in the social and historical process, social events and phenomena that cause science fiction cinema to change in form and content are defined and examined. In the second part, the films are selected as samples within the scope of the study were examined in the axis of historical film criticism, which is a film analysis method. The reason for choosing this method; that the selected films have given a genre-specific form by reproducing colonialism, resistance and colonial movements, which are historical and social phenomena in the past, with codes belonging to science fiction cinema.
