Perceptions of information technologies and software course teachers toward codi̇ng education

The purpose of this study was to explore the thoughts and perceptions information technologies and software course teachers about computing education. For this purpose, qualitative data were obtained from 22 information technologies and software teachers from Bolu city center, Mengen, Dörtdivan, Mudurnu, Yeniçağ, Seben, Göynük and Gerede by using case study method. Semi-structured interview protocol was used to handle the interviews. In this context, an interview form consisting of 10 questions was prepared in order to reveal the teachers' opinions about computing education. The questions included in the interview form were formed by the researchers considering the purpose of the research. Before the data collection process, two questions were arranged on the pilot application and the interview questions were finalized. Face-to-face interviews that lasted about 15 minutes were recorded with a voice recorder. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the obtained data. The findings of the research were evaluated in 9 categories. The findings of the study revealed that the thoughts and opinions of teachers about coding education were limited. It was seen that the teachers only mentioned about the thinking process, problem solving, creativity and algorithmic thinking as the components of the computing education. Lastly, it was observed that most of the teachers were not aware of computer science unplugged activities and those who were informed did not mention about the value of computer science unplugged activities that are expressed in the literature.
