Abstract (EN)
In today's circumstances, in order to meet the expectations of customers, OEMs are intended to produce engines with lower fuel consumptions without exceeding the legal emission limits but are pursued at the same time more powerful motors. In the purpose of this, any parameter that can lead to power loss in the produced engine is being examined in detailed and tried to be minimized. The primary objective of a piston ring system is to seal the combustion gases during the engine process while minimizing the lube oil transported to the combustion chamber and the pressure characteristics between the two piston rings are considered to have a significant impact in the oil consumption and blow by problems. For this purpose, it was decided to examine the effects of ring dynamics and behaviours on the second land pressure and friction for a heavy duty diesel engine by modelling the pressure between the two rings by using Orifice and Volume Method. To be able to understand the effects of the design parameters on the second land pressure, some of the geometrical and characteristic parameters of piston and ring have been changed and simulations have been run again. A DoE matrix has been created with Taguchi method to see the combined effect of the piston ring design parameters on the second land pressures. The study was terminated by investigating the influence of second land pressures on engine friction, oil film thickness and power loss.
