The family a means of biopower: a reserch on educator parents

Biopower is a concept that refers to the tools of power used by modern nation-states to control populations and is also used to describe the influence of families on their children in contemporary societies. The main aim of this research is to uncover how power relations within the family are formed and function. This research was conducted using a qualitative research method, and the sample was selected using a purposive sampling method, specifically the maximum variation sampling technique. The research prioritizes examining the impact of educator parents, who produce and transmit power through professional knowledge and life practices, on the subjectification processes of their children, based on the perspective that knowledge and power are interconnected. The researcher, as a natural member of the participant group, also assumed the role of a participant observer, which is why educator parents were chosen as the sample for this study. The current research is limited to educator parents in the Düzce province. The data were collected through semi-structured interview forms, and the data collection process was carried out through in-depth interviews conducted via the Zoom© platform. Content analysis was utilized in analyzing the data set obtained. According to the findings of this research, the family institution, as the most fundamental means of power, shapes individuals' thoughts and behaviors, reproduces gender roles, and plays a central role in the formation of subjectivity. This research has demonstrated that each family has unique power dynamics and plays a significant role in producing and sustaining societal power relations. Further in-depth studies on power relations in families with educator parents could provide a richer perspective for evaluating these findings.
