Determination of knowledge levels of student nurses on pressure ulcer prevention in a nursing school

Objective: This study was conducted with the aim of determining nursing student's knowledge of ways to prevent pressure ulcers. Materials and Method: The study group consisted of 295 student's majoring in the second, third and fourth grades in the Nursing School of Demiroğlu Science University Florance Nightingale Hospital, who willingly consented to take part in this research. The data was collected via "Student İnformation Form" prepared based on the related articles and ''The Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment Tool (PUKAT)'' developed by Beeckman and his counterparts in 2010 and translated into Turkish by Tulek and her counterparts in 2016. The obtained data was analyzed in light of SPSS for Windows 25.0 Program. During the evaluation of the data, descriptive statistical methods (number, percentage, min, max, median, average, standard deviation) were implemented. Findings: The student's general level of knowledge averaged 10,47± 2,77. When the subjects were seperately tahen into account, the average was 2,25± 1,16 for Ethiology and Development, 2,02±1,04 for Classification and Observation, 8,87± 0,75 for Risk Assessment, 0,61± 0,49 for Nutrition, 2,78±1,21 for Preventive measures to reduce the amount of pressure/shear, 1,93± 1,00 for Preventive measures to reduce the duration of pressure/shear. Conclusion: Necessary arrangements are needed to be made and encouragement in order for studenst's to gain adequate and up to date information about pressure ulcers prevention.
