ABSTRACTTHE ARTIST?S PASSION TO TRANSFORM THE LIFE EXPERIENCE AS ANUTOPIANBenya BAKIR ENMaster Thesis, Department of Education of ArtSupervisor: Doç. Birnur ERALDEM RDecember 2006, 91 pagesUtopia means ?the land which is no where?. The concept of utopia has led socialtransformations throughout several eras. If examined carefully, it?s seen that differentutopia types has been occured.In this study, it?s tried to analyze the different historical appearences of the utopiaconcept. Utopia is a multilayered structure in respect of meaning. Utopia is a criticalopposition towards the values of life which tends to become standardized. It projects torealize a new life comprehension shaping the future. There are also distopias saying thatutopias might conclude rigid systems while suggesting the perfect life and community.In the first part of this study, utopia concept is explained in a general view: Utopiaconcept is a point of departure for transformation of the social structure with it?s influenceon the social developments such as state-individual relations and woman?s place incommunity. In the second part of the study, utopia is handled in the context of it?srelations with art and life. In this section, it?s focused on alternative art projects which isdetermined by the artists? utopia. In this context, utopia shold be understood as anactivity changing life in the crossing point of reality and imaginary.Key Words: Utopia, Life, Artist, Experience, Nature
