NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF NATURAL CONVECTIONHEAT TRANSFER FROM PARTIALLY OPEN CAVITIESHEATED AT ONE WALL(M. Sc. Thesis)Serhat BAYSALGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECNOLOGYJanuary 2006ABSTRACTHeat transfer is very important for the reliable operation and proper design ofelectronic and micro-electronic systems. The performance of these devicesdepend on temperature, therefore, heat removal affects both their performanceand dimensions. Especially in recent years, a substantial amount of research hasbeen done on the heat transfer from electronic and micro-electronic devices. Inthis study, the heat transfer by natural convection from partially open cavitieswith one wall heated was investigated numerically. The aim of this study wasthe steady state investigation of the natural convection heat transfer inside thecavity under different heat fluxes (q″), different opening ratios (OR), differenttilt angels (θ) and different cavity aspect ratios (AR), for top and center openingθpositions. For this purpose, the equations of conservation of mass, momentumand energy were solved using adequate boundary conditions by means of thePHOENICS code.According to the results obtained, the average heat transfer coefficient increasesand the average wall temperature decreases, with the increase in opening ratioand decrease in the tilt angel. Best heat transfer was obtained with themaximum aspect ratio for opening ratio of 0,75 and tilt angel of -10°.°Science Code : 914.1.065Key Words : Natural convection, opening ratio, aspect ratioPage Number : 182Adviser : Prof. Dr. Şenol BAŞKAYA
