Structuring the group supervision process in the supervision of individual counseling practicum based on the discrimination model

The aim of this study is to improve the supervision process of the graduate level Individual Counseling Practice (ICP) course through a group supervision process that is carried out based on the Discrimination Model. The action research design was used in the study where the supervision process was structured and implemented based on the Discrimination Model and the differences in the students' self-efficacy and anxiety levels were examined. The study process followed a cycle consisting of defining a focus area, collecting data, analyzing and interpreting the data, and creating an action plan. Data were collected based on observations, interviews, dissertation committee meetings' reports, and diaries written by the researcher and the students. A supervision agreement was established on the basis of the Discrimination Model and a 14-week supervision process was designed by taking into consideration the stages of a group supervision process. The ICP course that involved the implementation of the supervision process was conducted during the 2017-2018 academic year with four women students and was offered in the Guidance and Counseling Master's Program in the Educational Sciences Institute at Anadolu University. It was observed that the students' self-efficacy developed on the basis of counseling performance skills, cognitive counseling skills, professional behaviors, and self-awareness. In addition, the students experienced a decreased level of anxiety regarding both the counseling and the supervision process. The results of this research have shown that the supervision process can be carried out in the form of group supervision that is designed based on the Discrimination Model and can be effective in supporting the student development.
