Ankara: Gazi University: 2011This study was conducted as a definitive research aiming to determine individuals? awareness of stroke risk factors and the precautions they take. The research sample is comprised of 330 individuals over the age of 15 who applied from regions in the vicinity of Cumhuriyet Family Health Center during June-July, 2010. The questionnaire, prepared by the researcher by scanning the literature, was implemented using the face-to-face interview technique. The data was assessed with statistic SPSS program using percentages and chi square test. 50% of the participants of the research were female, with an average age of 49.75. Its found that the most common risk factors are hypertension (34.5%), diabetes (31.5%), and cardiovascular diseases (12.7%). According to the results, the most widely recognized of the variable risk factors of stroke are hypertension (87.9%), obesity (59.7%), nutritional behaviors (58.8%), physical inactivity (50.9%) and diabetes (50.6%), hyperlipidemia (50.0%). While the most widely recognized invariable factors of stroke are family history (27.9%) and age (24.5%). The most commonly utilized precautions are sodium limitation for hypertension (53%), reduced fat consumption due to cholesterol (49.4%), reduced fat consumption due to cardiac diseases (39.1%), reduced consumption of sucrose-rich foods due to diabetes (59.7%), physical activities for obesity (24%) and jogging for physical inactivity (22.1%). Its recommended that medical training and scanning programs should be organized to promote public awareness regarding risk factors in order to prevent cases of stroke.Keywords: Nursing, stroke, risk factors, precautions, training
